Flies and houseflies

They are one of the most common household pests in our environment.
The fly is very similar to the housefly, therefore, they are often confused.

Why it is a pest?

  • They spread disease by carrying bacteria from food waste, faeces and other decaying organic matter.
  • They contaminate open foods.
  • Droplets of faeces contaminate furniture surfaces, crockery and glass.
  • They create discomfort in living and working environments.

Key attributes

Development from egg to adult takes about 1-6 weeks. 8⎯12 generations can develop during the summer.
The maximum lifespan for adults is 3 months.
Males die quickly after mating.
They are typical saprophages – feed on dead organic matter. They are omnivores and are attracted to any liquid or easily dissolved food, as their mouths are only designed to lick and suck up liquid food.
They are found in manure, waste, carrion, foodstuffs, etc.
The fly is most commonly found in heated homes; it prefers warmth more compared to houseflies.
