Fruit flies (drosophila)

They are insects that are found all over the world. There are almost 2 000 species. Drosophila are very useful for genetic research because of their ability to reproduce quickly and survive easily under artificial conditions. In 2000, the gene sequence of Drosophila melanogaster was identified.
These flies are used as test subjects for the assessment of adverse effects of medicinal products and a wide range of chemicals.

Why it is a pest?

They spoil damaged fruit and vegetables (intact).
They carry a wide range of pathogens: viruses, bacteria and other micro-organisms.
They contaminate food, utensils and surfaces.
They create discomfort in living and working environments.

Key attributes

Females can smell decaying and souring products (alcohol and vinegar) from a great distance.
Most often they appear in breweries, sweets factories, fruit shops, vaults and cafes.
Development from egg to adult takes 8⎯11 days.
The lifespan of adult flies is 2⎯9 weeks.
They are only found where fermentation takes place, therefore, they do not damage healthy fruit.
